Legito PowerUp 2024 The Pressure to Innovate
My topic (‘The Pressure to Innovate’) seems related to a common theme in all organizations. I wanted to recognize the pressure faced by teams who mostly provide a support function for their organization, but I wanted to emphasize the opportunity to make innovation an expression of a personal commitment to making things better, not just more efficient.
- Legito exists for subject matter experts to leverage their skills and experience to make work better for their colleagues.
- Innovation is not necessarily efficient because it involves trial and error, and a readiness to tackle problems differently.
- I gave the example of the innovation that resulted in the availability of life-saving AED devices (automatic external defibrillators). A machine developed by people with a true understanding of how technology could be put in the hands of the general public to apply medical knowledge to save lives. It was not a device that replicated CPR given by first aiders.
“…the biggest potential for innovation comes from enabling people to do work that would be hard or impossible if they are not supported…”
I looked at the opportunity for innovation in organisations with document-centric work, using this matrix:
- The richest potential for innovation with Legito comes from the top left and bottom right quadrants. In reality, experts still have to spend some of their time on routine tasks.
- For example, professionals need to perform client onboarding tasks to comply with anti-money laundering procedures. That’s the top left quadrant.
- In the bottom right quadrant we have work of the type performed by many Legito customers. Skilled work for the people your organisations serve, but performed by colleagues who include new graduates, or colleagues still acquiring experience in their fields of expertise. These people need support to be able to do their work to the required level while also remaining profitable.
- When we talk about the ‘pressure to innovate’, I fear we too often perceive it as an external pressure imposed on us to get more done. I know there is some of that about, but often it’s a disguised way of demanding more efficiency.
- I think the pressure to innovate should come from within. It should be about our human desire to make things better for those around us, so we grow as individuals, and we can enjoy being part of a growth environment.
- I concluded my presentation with some observations about innovating with Legito. Before starting a Legito deployment, consider why the work matters. Who will use it, and what do they need? Why do they need it? How do they need it?
- Legito is designed for humans to do work with and for other humans, so if we don’t answer those questions, we have little chance of truly innovating.
- I gave some examples of innovation borne out of requests I have heard from teams that want to adopt Legito, and I listed some of the under-used features of Legito.
- There are too many to list here, but you can see them if you play back the presentation.
- If I have to pick just one example to include here, it’s this: put your name on your work. If you put your name on your work, it makes it easier for colleagues to provide feedback.
- But, more important, if you are making things better, you should be proud to be associated with your work – be a creator, a builder, an artist – make it personal – make it yours.
